World’s first clone of endangered horse a last-ditch effort to save species

In order to make the breeding programme genetically even more diverse, experiments are being carried out to clone animals that have been dead a long time. Przewalski’s horses are to benefit from this.

Note: This effort did not arise from the risk of an inbreeding depression – in fact, the opposite is true. It is just important to be prepared for any emergencies, before they occur. If you close the stable door when the horse has already bolted, you risk the survival of such a species. The article’s heading is indeed a little dramatising, but nevertheless true, because the effort is part of the species’ last chance.
