Inflation, rising prices, sustainability – there is an increasing number of reasons for zoos to become more and more self-sufficient. San Diego Zoo is currently on this path.
Note: San Diego Zoo is not the only zoo that no longer wants to source all its food from others. The “Loro Parque Group” has been covering part of the zoo’s, hotel’s, and restaurant’s needs from its own organically grown produce.
For zoological institutions, producing their own feed has the added benefit of being able to monitor processes and optimize them for animal welfare.
