How Well are the Animals in our Zoos?

The television programme Quarks addresses the topics conservation, conservation breeding, surplus and senior animals and explores them in various zoos and aquariums.

Note: Unfortunately, the contribution is only available by following this link until the 25.08.2025. The report also addresses the topic of so-called “surplus animals” and takes the time to explain it: The breeding of animals serves their well being. There are, however, animals which cannot or can no longer make a useful contribution to the breeding programme and would rather take away space from important breeding animals. These surplus animals are then killed humanely and serve as important food for other animals. The lions, for example, benefit greatly from the Pygmy goat’s whole body.
